The Power of Figurative Language

$35.00

Saturday, May 21st @10am

In writing, we are stirred by what we recognize as ourselves, our humanity, our memories, brought to life figuratively. Figurative language, or symbolism, is not just a poetry trick, but a profound way of illuminating the truth in our writing. In this workshop you will learn how to work artfully with symbolism and imagery to help you find nuanced ways of expressing all that is hard to explain. These skills will guide you as you transform black-and-white memories and ideas into intense color; a tool that can be sharpened to cut to the heart of the matter in all storytelling.

This workshop is led by writer Natalie Disney. She recently earned her MFA in creative writing from Boise State University, where she served as Associate Editor of The Idaho Review. Work from her fiction collection has been published in The Florida Review, The Mississippi Review, and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and the PEN America Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She is a recipient of the 2017 Glenn Balch Award for fiction. She teaches writing at Boise State University and The Cabin Center for Readers and Writers and is at work on her first novel.
